The young orphan Shyamu (Amitabh) is brought up by a small-time thief Madan Puri who trains Shyamu also to be a thief. Shyamu is always on the run for fear of being caught by the police and one day while escaping from the police he lands up in the green room of a popular stage actress cum dancer Mumtaz who mistakes him to be the writer who was supposed to come that day to discuss their new play. After meeting Mumtaz, he decides to call it quits and start life afresh by masquerading as the writer. Unluckily for him, the Inspector (played by Ajit) chasing him had managed to get a good look at his face.
